Browse through an aisle of moisturizers in any store and you can quickly become overwhelmed. With endless lotions, creams and serums, how to choose the right moisturizer for your skin type can be a daunting task.
Let’s begin with some of the basics.
- Just because you use a moisturizer on your body doesn’t mean you should use it on your face.
- Always apply moisturizer after getting out of the shower or bath while you are still damp.
- Dermatologists recommend using a product for either body or face with a minimum SPF 30.
- If a moisturizer has anti-oxidants, it works for all skin types. It helps neutralize free radicals or molecules that break up the cells of your skin. Look for green tea and chamomile.
- Avoid perfumes and colourings, which can irritate your skin.
Know Your Skin Type
This can sometimes be confusing. Just because you have oily skin in your 20s and are prone to blemishes does not mean you will be stuck with that issue forever. In fact, your skin type can change several times during your lifetime. Hormonal changes, your environment, and your genes all contribute to your skin type at any given period in your life.
Choosing the right moisturizer for your skin type will save you lots of grief.
Normal Skin / Combination Skin
Normal or combination skin is quite common and can be frustrating. Certain areas are usually more oily or dry than others. Think of the T-zone (nose and forehead), which seems to be more oily than the rest of the face. You might want to use two kinds of moisturizers to put your best face forward.
Consider gels, creams or lotions due their high water content. They will hydrate certain dry areas of the skin and provide some oil to maintain hydration. Best to avoid heavy creams.
Dry skin feels tight and sensitive. Fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable because dry skin has lost its ability to create natural hydration. Choose a moisturizing cream especially for dry skin. The drier your skin, the heavier the moisturizer cream should be. Find one containing hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) to deliver hydration directly to the skin cells.
Drink plenty of water each day and avoid caffeine and alcohol.
Oily skin is characterized by enlarged pores, which can easily become clogged leading to acne. Contrary to what some may think, you still need to use a moisturizer on oily skin. Find a gel with a high water content since they have little wax, oils and emulsifiers. Consequently, they hydrate the skin without sitting on the skin. A gentle daily exfoliation helps prevent breakouts and keeps the skin balanced.
