These are included in products as a preservative to extend shelf life. They contribute to acne by over stimulating hormones. This type of ingredient includes many subtypes: methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben. The reason that these sound like petroleum products, is that they are, and they do not benefit your face.
Alcohol dries the skin, which in turn causes glands to over-secrete oil. Just as drinking alcohol can dehydrate your body, alcohol on your face does the same to your skin.
Although we all like to put something on our face that smells pleasant, many times the ingredients that give it that peach or lavender scent are clogging your pores and adding to the irritation. Switch to unscented cleansers and moisturizers.
Coconut oil is highly comedogenic. It blocks and clogs pores. All comedogenic ingredients block and trap the dead cells and chemicals in your makeup products inside your pores.
This is acceptable for minimal use but it will irritate and dry out skin.
Besides avoiding the above six ingredients, here are some proactive lifestyle measures you can take to improve the look of your skin.
- Drink plenty of water. Never forget to hydrate.
- Change your pillowcase frequently.
- Avoid overindulging in alcohol.
- Always remove all traces of makeup before going to bed.
- Stay away from fatty and sugary foods.
