Reasons to wear SPF Every Day

Why You Should Wear SPF Every Day

By | Skincare | No Comments

If there’s one anti-ageing tip you should follow religiously, it should be wearing sunscreen every single day. Although sunny vacations may be nice and a trip to the tropics might have you feeling free, it’s important not to forget the dangers of sun damage that can really wreak havoc on your skin and health.

Even on days where there isn’t much visible sun in the sky, it’s still extremely important to make sunscreen a part of your routine and use it daily. 80% of the sun’s rays can pass through even the thickest of clouds, meaning that you may be exposing yourself to the sun when you don’t even expect it.

At Clearview MediSpa, we take skin care seriously and have no shortage of skincare hacks and treatments. If you’re not already convinced, we’ve compiled a list of reasons why you need to start wearing sunscreen every day. After all, better safe than sorry!

Reduce your Risk of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a common and prevalent form of cancer in North America. By using sunscreen on your skin daily, you can significantly reduce your risk. Ultimately, this means that sunscreen can improve your quality of life and actually help you live longer and healthier. Skin cancer can be fatal, so do you really want to take that risk?

Adding sunscreen to your daily routine shouldn’t be difficult. You can even mix it in with your foundation or find a nice moisturizing formula to wear underneath your makeup.

Nowadays, with many different sunscreen formulas on the market, it’s never been easier to find something that fits with your skin type and doesn’t leave your skin greasy or with an odd undertone.

In fact, many sunscreens are now formulated with other great skin-smoothing ingredients to leave skin brighter and healthier.

Prevent Skin Sagging and Premature Aging

Sun damage is known to cause wrinkles, sagging and discoloration of the skin. Severely sun-damaged skin is usually leathery in texture and riddled with sunspots.

Since prevention is key, you must wear sunscreen if anti-ageing is important to you, and you want to keep your skin smooth and youthful for as long as possible.

When it comes to skincare and the use of sunscreen, age is not a factor. In fact, the younger you are when you start using sunscreen, the better off your skin will be in the long-run.

Protect your Skin from Harmful Rays

UV rays from the sun are both harmful and abundant. UV is what causes sunburn and the awful pain and peeling that comes with it. While you might laugh off a little sunburn or just think of it as a small nuisance, it really is a sign that your skin cells have been damaged by the sun.

Not only do UV rays cause damage to the skin, but they can suppress the immune system and damage the eyes. This is why wearing sunglasses out in the sun is also important as sunlight exposure can cause vision problems and cataracts.

In order to protect your skin from these harmful rays, use products with an SPF of 30 or higher every day on your face and body as UV rays can even get through clothing.

Keep a Healthy Glow and Complexion

If you want to stay beautiful and glowing throughout your later years, sunscreen is the beauty product you can rely on. Sun damage to the skin can reduce collagen levels, resulting in lifeless and dull-looking skin.

Don’t let yourself be a victim to the sun’s harmful rays. It may not show up now, but you will see the effects of sun damage most prominently years down the road. So, if you want to age gracefully and be glowing at any age- use sunscreen daily!

Other Methods of Sun Protection

When protecting your skin from the sun, sunscreen isn’t the only method you should rely on; hats and cover-ups can provide some protection as well. Sunglasses are also great for protecting the eyes. Look for sunglasses that block out 100% of UV rays and are polarized to help protect from glare.

When considering sun safety and protection, also think of using extra clothing and layers in the sun. Many people even use umbrellas as protection under the sun. While some sun on the skin does feel good, try to stay mostly in shady areas and avoid the sun when possible.

If you do end up getting too much sun in a day, make sure to moisturize your skin and use aloe vera so that your skin stays supple and doesn’t dry out.

Relax in the Sun Without Worry

Wearing sunscreen every day means that you don’t have to worry so much when you’re outdoors and enjoying nature. For many people that have a passion for sports and outdoor activities, sun exposure can be an inevitable part of their lives.

Even if you enjoy travelling and warm weather, you shouldn’t have to be afraid of the sun and stepping outside. With proper sunscreen use, you can relax, knowing that you are going outdoors with the proper protection.

So, go ahead and take a dip in that pool or get your gardening gloves out! Just remember to reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours or right after you take a cool swim as sunscreen isn’t typically waterproof.

Ultimately, whether you plan on laying out on a beach sometime soon or you are just concerned with sun safety, it’s time to start whipping out the sunscreen. Remember to be vigilant when you are outside, regardless of the weather conditions.

Even if you think you are safe indoors, being near windows means incidental sun exposure. The sun is the center of our solar system, so it’s extremely hard not to encounter it in some way or another!

The Many Benefits of Collagen

The Many Benefits of Collagen

By | Skincare | No Comments

Nowadays, collagen has become a popular protein in both the beauty and nutrition worlds. But you might ask, why exactly is collagen so important, and what can it do for your body?

Collagen is the most plentiful protein in our bodies as it acts as a connector that holds everything together from tissue and skin right down to our bones. As we age, the production of collagen slows down, which is why many opt to include it as a supplement in their daily lives.

At Clearview MediSpa, we offer collagen-stimulating treatments such as Forma, a revolutionary wrinkle treatment that helps the skin to generate new collagen for a more youthful appearance. Below we’ve gathered some of the best benefits of collagen to show you how useful and vital this key protein is.

Helps Improve Skin

In today’s market, many products and supplements advertise the anti-ageing properties of collagen. As much of our skin is composed of collagen, it plays a significant role in skin’s elasticity, strength, and suppleness.

Collagen is the most abundant when we are young; we can see the effects of ageing as we get older and start producing less collagen. This is why collagen is seen as a prime solution to dehydrated skin and dreaded wrinkles.

In fact, there have been studies observing women of different ages and their reactions to collagen supplements. Older women who take collagen supplements have visible improvements in the texture and elasticity of their skin.

While the information out there is definitely promising, keep in mind that the type of collagen supplement that has provided positive results for participants is hydrolyzed collagen. This type of collagen quickly and effectively absorbs and is used by the body. So, make sure to do your research and read the ingredient labels carefully before committing to anything.

While ingesting collagen has seen benefits, there are also ways to stimulate your body to generate more collagen. At Clearview MediSpa, we use Forma, a wrinkle treatment that uses the latest technologies, radiofrequency energy, and heat to tighten and smooth the skin, all while generating new collagen.

The benefits of this treatment include a reduction of fine lines and deep wrinkles, lifting and tightening of problematic areas and continuous improvements as treatments progress.

Additionally, treatments are non-invasive, require no downtime and minimal discomfort. Our specialists are dedicated to addressing your concerns and making sure that you are comfortable.

Strengthens Nails

Another major benefit of collagen is that it can help you grow and strengthen your weak, brittle nails. Do you ever wish that you could skip those trips to the nail salon and rock natural, beautiful nails? Or that your nails could grow a little bit past your fingertips before breaking or chipping completely?

If this sounds like you, then collagen could very well be your solution. Studies have reported that collagen can help grow nails and keep them from breaking. So if you’re in the market for beautiful natural nails — and who isn’t — then a little collagen in your routine might be just the solution for you.

Relieves Back Pain and Joint Pain

As we get older, it’s no secret that our bodies develop aches and pains in places that were otherwise running smoothly. Some of us even develop joint pain or arthritis in certain areas. The effects of collagen on joint and back pain have been studied, and while more research is needed to make a definitive conclusion, it has shown promise as a natural pain reliever.

This would make sense, as collagen is an integral protein in our connective tissue that supports our joints and helps them move properly. If we were to lose or damage vital connective tissue, it could easily result in joint pain and even loss of movement.

Promotes a Healthy Heart

Ultimately, the use of collagen promotes heart health by helping to lower cholesterol levels and prevent heart disease and plaque buildup in the arteries. This is especially important as we age and become more susceptible to these issues with decreased collagen production.

Depending on your diet, age, and genetics, you may be more at risk for heart disease, which makes it all the more important to start living a healthy lifestyle right now. Don’t wait until it’s too late, feed your body with nutritious food, exercise regularly, get outside and don’t be afraid to throw a little collagen in the mix while you’re at it!

Collagen-Rich Foods

While many choose to use supplements to enhance and up their collagen intake, there are many natural sources of collagen that are readily available and quite tasty. Fish such as salmon and tuna or vegetables like tomatoes, spinach or garlic all help your body to generate more collagen.

Eggs, peanuts, and berries are also nutritious collagen boosting foods. The most popular and well-known collagen booster is bone broth, a soup made from the brewed bones and tissue of cows or chicken. This has long been a natural anti-ageing remedy that many swear by. Some even suggest drinking bone broth daily to keep a youthful, wrinkle-free appearance.

Now that we’ve outlined many of the benefits of using collagen in your daily routine, we hope you can find a way to incorporate more of this healthy protein into your diet. At Clearview MediSpa in Toronto, we’re more than happy to help you upgrade your collagen use for firmer, younger-looking skin.

Sweater Weather, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and Lots of Moisturizer: Your Fall 2019 Skincare Guide

Sweater Weather, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and Lots of Moisturizer: Your Fall 2019 Skincare Guide

By | Skincare | No Comments

The season of pumpkin-spice-and-everything-nice is in the air; the cool fall breeze sweeps around Toronto to be felt, first by quickly drying up your skin. The stale air, low humidity, and sudden drops in temperature, coupled with dry heat indoors, are known to cause disasters like the unshakeable, perpetual itch and, for some, even cause conditions like eczema to manifest. But who says you have to suffer through dry skin and feel less than beautiful this fall as you count down to the most wonderful time of the year?

Welcome the crisp fall air with a cozy sweater, pumpkin spice latte, and an improved skincare regimen to fend off unwanted dry skin, itchiness, and breakouts. Rejuvenate your skin from the summer, and look absolutely radiant as you move from the quintessential fallen-brown-and-orange-leaves photos to trick-or-treating with the kids, and finally through to the holiday celebrations. Let’s talk about switching up your skincare routine this season.

Swap Out Lightweight Gel for a Thick Moisturizer

With long days under the sun in Toronto, the last thing anyone wanted was the noticeable extra sheen of oily skin, but this fall, we’re laying it on thick. With the cold air drying up your skin the moment you step out, it’s time to swap your summertime essential with a thicker one that packs a lot more moisturizing power. Hydrate your skin with a thick moisturizer formulated with ceramides, or the essential, healthy fatty acids that occur naturally in the skin during the warmer months, but recede in the cold. For increased moisturizing power, upgrade to a moisturizer that also packs hyaluronic acid.

Lather Body Lotion

We’re not kidding; if you’re not yet practically bathing in body lotion, it’s time to turn to this cold weather essential now. Regular soap and water—or even your favourite shower gel or body wash—on their own don’t cut it when it comes to fighting off dry, itchy skin. Your skin requires regular and generous amounts of hydration in the colder months, so don’t forget to add body lotion to your skincare routine as you pamper yourself this fall. And come the freezing winter, you’ll thank your body lotion for providing that much-needed protective barrier over sensitive skin, allowing it to stay moisturized and hydrated no matter how low the temperatures drop.

Exfoliating? Less is More

Exfoliation is a great way to nourish your skin after a long, hard week. But you might want to resist the urge to peel off dead layers and using robust ingredients like retinoids and glycolics this fall. Instead of exfoliating, switch to a cold weather-friendly skincare staple. Skincare specialists recommend glycolic treatment pads or a once-a-week face mask to erase discolourations and blemishes caused by the summer sun while rejuvenating your skin in time for a warm, radiant glow over the holiday season, and a full rebirth come spring.

Take Your Vitamins

Skincare isn’t just about lathering on creams and serums to combat dryness caused by the cold; opt for a lasting, more sustainable solution like taking antioxidants. Your skin will thank you for this, as it’s able to repair from sun damage and environmental exposure from the hustle and bustle of Toronto, looking renewed and refreshed in time for fall activities and holiday celebrations. The next time you’re out shopping for skincare essentials, keep an eye out for liquid supplements to help the skin heal from damage and restore naturally, thanks to the right amount of hydration and absolutely glowing radiance.

Use a Humidifier

Just like sun damage in the summer, humidity is the skin’s downfall in the colder months. And sometimes a skincare regimen alone isn’t enough to keep the skin hydrated and glowing in the fall, especially as temperatures start to drop. Invest in a humidifier to install at home, so as the heat envelops your place, so will this natural moisturizing boost. After all, there’s more to skin care than just the essentials, as its health is part of the larger environment that you work, play, and live in all season long.

Long-Term Skin Rejuvenation

Fall is a time of transition from the sweltering summer heat to the freezing Toronto winter, and it’s a great time to work on and pamper yourself. Rejuvenate tired skin and restore its natural glow as you start to bundle up for the cold, and bring out more of your natural inner beauty as you move through the seasons. Achieve visible results in younger-looking skin that’s here to stay (and in no time), unlike other treatments.

Combine your skincare routine with effective and longer-lasting skin rejuvenation treatment. Using all-natural radiofrequency energy delivered deep into your pores, you can say goodbye to wrinkles and blemishes once and for all, without a lengthy procedure and recovery, as well as endless months of waiting to see even the first hints of visible results.

Forma and Fractora are two of the leading radio frequency-based skin treatments. Gentle heat is delivered to the deepest layers of the skin; they can stimulate collagen production and boost your regular skincare routine in time for fall activities and upcoming holiday parties. In just a few sessions, these anti-ageing treatments can reduce deep wrinkles on the face and neck, and even out your complexion so that you can look flawlessly—but effortlessly—beautiful at any age

Fall back in love with yourself this season. Embrace the fall breeze with skincare essentials you know and love, and consider an upgrade to a longer-lasting youthful glow. Start with easing fine lines and wrinkles to rejuvenate tired-looking skin. At Clearview MediSpa, we might not have the keys to the fountain of youth, but we have the next best thing—helping you look and feel beautiful at any age. Seven Quick Ways to Treat Wrinkles and Start Looking Younger Today

Seven Quick Ways to Treat Wrinkles and Start Looking Younger Today

By | Skincare | No Comments

Past acne- and zit-filled teenage years, and learning to embrace the natural beauty of your features in your 20s and 30s, are the signs of ageing that start to manifest. They say life begins at 40—and apparently so do the fine lines and wrinkles.

A lot of women take to this development by adding a handful of steps to their regular skin care regimen to prevent the spread of wrinkles and get rid of them for good. From night creams to fillers, radiofrequency treatments, and going all out with a complex, highly invasive facelift surgery, there are plenty of ways to regain your youthful glow. Find the best wrinkle treatment for you in Toronto that doesn’t require going under the knife and spending weeks in recovery, and bring out your natural beauty effortlessly, at any age.

Topical Retinoids and Skincare Must-Haves

Skincare plays a huge role in keeping skin smooth and clear, helping you achieve that effortlessly refreshed look straight from beauty sleep. For fighting the first signs of wrinkles or easing those fine lines, a lot of people are upping their regular skin care regimen with the help of topical retinoids.

Over-the-Counter Wrinkle Creams

If you’re not a huge fan of taking huge risks as in topical retinoids, there are safer over-the-counter options for wrinkle treatments. Anti-ageing creams are designed to smooth out mild wrinkles and fine lines. All you need to do is incorporate one into your skincare regimen. You should begin to see results with regular use. Just make sure to buy one with a proven formulation for easing fine lines, but bear in mind that these over-the-counter versions may not be as intense as their prescription-only counterparts.

Regular Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion

Both fan-favourite wrinkle treatments in Toronto are designed to smooth out the skin by peeling off old, dead layers to allow refreshed and younger-looking skin to develop and surface. Standard dermabrasion uses a rotating brush to achieve this; whereas, its more advanced cousin, microdermabrasion, only removes a small amount of exterior layers at a time using vacuum suction and aluminum oxide crystals. Depending on the severity of the wrinkles, you might need to wait a few months before you see a difference. Besides, this varies according to the number of sessions you need.

Laser Wrinkle Treatment

Lasers are used for many cosmetic treatments, ranging from hair removal to skincare. A step up from topical creams and dermabrasion techniques, ablative laser resurfacing stimulates the regeneration of collagen fibres that slow down or stop altogether with ageing. Beautiful results from this treatment include soft, but taut skin, although the lesions may need up to a few months to heal completely. Recent advancements like pulsed light and radiofrequency equipment mean there’s less risk of damage to the epidermis layer of the skin; while boasting a shortened recovery time.

Smooth Tissue Space Fillers

Have you ever wondered why younger skin is soft and taut at the same time? That’s because of naturally smooth skin tissues. Over the course of ageing, the skin becomes prone to dehydration, resulting in wrinkles that can quickly become pronounced without proper care.

To combat this and restore the skin’s natural plumpness and softness; smooth tissue space fillers were formulated with fat, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. These are injected into the wrinkles and creases to hydrate and smooth them out, making you look radiantly younger for usually a few months until new fillers have to be injected again.

Dermal Fillers

Administered as a prescription medication in Toronto skincare clinics, wrinkle treatment consists of an injection that blocks nerve impulses to facial muscles. But don’t let that scare you; this simply prevents fine lines and wrinkles from forming due to repeated—and sometimes excessive—facial movements, as in frowning for prolonged periods. The reduced muscle activity keeps the skin firm and taut, preventing new wrinkles from forming as old, deep ones are reduced.

Wrinkle treatment injections can treat crow’s feet, frown lines, laugh lines, and worry lines across the forehead — these last for several months, providing a much-needed break from temporary treatments. The result is a relaxed and refreshed appearance and a longer-lasting youthful glow.

Forma and Fractora

Why settle for multiple treatments that only provide temporary results? Enter radio frequency energy and gentle heat used by advanced wrinkle treatments like Forma and Fractora.

These advanced wrinkle treatments use gentle heat to deliver a radiofrequency deep into the layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production that stalls with ageing. With new collagen fibres, you can see deep wrinkles across the forehead, eyes and mouth, and even on the neck greatly reduced in no time, with visible results after every treatment.

Once your recommended number of treatments are completed, there’s no going back to looking tired and feeling less than beautiful every day. As a nice bonus, you’ll also look absolutely radiant without blemishes, redness, and any discomfort common in other treatments. Enjoy firm and taut skin enhanced naturally, and take years off your real age, so you can keep them guessing!

True beauty doesn’t age, and it’s time that you live confident in this. Refresh your skin and peel back old, ageing layers, starting with easing fine lines and deep wrinkles. Clearview MediSpa offers the latest wrinkle treatment in Toronto to fight the signs of ageing and restore younger-looking skin in no time, for longer! Types and Causes of Wrinkles

Types and Causes of Wrinkles

By | Skincare | No Comments

Wrinkles. They’re inevitable, and we all get them as we grow older. It’s a natural part of ageing, but what really causes them? Women start to worry about signs of ageing around the age of 29, and fine lines are the first thing women tend to notice. Did you know that there are different types of wrinkles? But not to worry, here is a breakdown of these wrinkles, what causes them, and tips on how to prevent them so you can have healthy and youthful skin for years to come.

It was traditionally believed that wrinkles fell into just two categories:

Dynamic Wrinkles – Those lines that result from repeated facial movements (such as smiling) that form creases in the skin.

Static Wrinkles – The lines that occur from your skin losing elasticity and collagen, and that eventually sag.

There are actually four different types of wrinkles, with each type of wrinkle having its own internal and external causes.

1. Atrophic crinkling rhytids

These wrinkles are those little parallel lines that disappear when your skin is stretched taut. They can occur on your face or anywhere on your body when you lose collagen and elasticity, which leads to the sagging of skin. The main cause of this type of wrinkle is sun damage. UV exposure unleashes free radicals in our skin that break down the building blocks that give our skin firmness and structure, collagen, and elastin. To prevent these types of wrinkles, ensure that you wear SPF sun protection daily, especially on your face, neck, and chest and any other exposed areas.

2. Permanent elastic creases

Permanent elastic creases are lines that end up becoming permanent wrinkles as we age. They tend to show up on our cheeks, upper lip, and the base of our necks. Similar to the last type, sun exposure can make these lines worse. Smoking is also a big factor in deepening these lines, like those you get around your mouth from continuously pursing your lips. Whenever you smoke, you also expose the surface of your skin to the toxic chemicals and carcinogens. Your body needs to heal and form healthy skin cells, so when you inhale, you inhibit your body’s ability to circulate oxygen to your skin. This often leads to a dull complexion.

3. Dynamic expression lines

These are lines you get from repeated facial muscle movements that cause creases in the skin that become more permanent and usually show up around the mouth, eyes, and forehead. These lines are inevitable, as you get them from living your life and being human. They result from the moments you’ve squinted on a sunny day, laughed at an inside joke, or frowned. It’s almost impossible not to get these lines unless you stop expressing yourself, so these creases on your face are bound to appear. However, one way to avoid squinting is by wearing sunglasses as often as possible whenever you’re out in the sun.

4. Gravitational folds

These are those wrinkles that occur naturally with age as our skin loses structure and starts to fold and sag. As the name suggests, time and gravity will lead to ageing. The best thing to do with these types of wrinkles is to start early with the prevention, rather than waiting for them to appear and then start treatment. Incorporating anti-ageing products in your skincare at an early age would help prevent gravitational folds.

Here are some skincare tips to have youthful and glowing skin:

SPF

Our skin’s texture and tone is compromised when our skin is damaged by UV exposure. When exposed to the sun, free radicals age skin by causing hyperpigmentation and breaks down collagen and elastin, which leads to sagging and wrinkles. By consistently wearing SPF, even on cloudy days, it can help prevent ageing. You accumulate a lot of sun exposure from everyday things we don’t even think about, like driving and walking outside, and that exposure adds up. Use a daily moisturizer that includes broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection of at least SPF 30 at least 15 minutes before heading outside. Don’t forget to apply it to the neck and chest area as well, as these areas can show signs of ageing too. Reapply every 1 to 2 hours and avoid the sun during peak UV hours from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Invest in Skincare with these Anti-Aging Ingredients

Retinol

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that smooths skin by exfoliating dead skin cells and encourages new cell turnover and collagen production. Always use retinol at night, as they can make skin sensitive to sunlight and could potentially harm your skin if you’re not careful. Start off with applying it a couple of times a week, as it may also cause some slight skin irritation and may take a bit of time for the skin to adjust.

Hyaluronic Acid

When your skin is dehydrated, fine lines and wrinkles are made more apparent. Hyaluronic acid is a moisture humectant, meaning it grabs moisture and holds it to your skin’s surface to deliver hydration. This also helps plump skin to fill out fine lines and restore suppleness to your complexion.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants help fight those free radicals from sun exposure that break down collagen. They work to stop free radical damage and support skin healing by encouraging cell repair and rebuilding collagen and elastin.

Peptides

Peptides are chains of amino acids, which make up the skin protein, collagen. Restoring peptides helps your skin by rebuilding blocks of collagen to fortify skin and bring back its firmness.

Tips to Protect Your Skin This Summer

Tips to Protect Your Skin This Summer

By | Skincare | No Comments

It only takes about 15 minutes for ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun to cause skin damage. Prolonged exposure and damage can lead to various forms of skin cancer, but, luckily, most of which are preventable. It’s not only the sun that is skin-damaging; tanning beds, smoking, and an unhealthy diet can all have ill effects on your skin.

It’s important to know how to take care of your skin, especially when exposed to the sun. Here are nine tips to protect your skin this summer!

1. Try and avoid the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. This is the time when the sun is most intense and produces the highest levels of heat for the day. If you can’t avoid being outside during these hours, use an umbrella, a tree, or another type of shelter to seek shade. Also, use protective clothing like hats, long sleeves, and sunscreen even when in the shade.

2. Use sunscreen when outdoors. Higher SPF numbers indicate increased protection. We recommend using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Use sunscreen even on cloudy or cool days, as damage from the sun’s rays can still occur. After swimming or when sweating, re-apply every two hours. Check the expiration date, as shelf life is typically three years, and less if it has been stored in high temperatures. When sunscreen has expired, there is basically no protection from the harmful UV rays. It can also be beneficial to incorporate a facial sunscreen every day, rain or shine, so your skin will always be protected.

3. Wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Proper, protective sunglasses help prevent damage to the sensitive skin around your eyes, as well as cataracts. When we don’t have sunglasses to protect our eyes, we automatically squint to protect ourselves from the bright and intense rays of light. This stresses the skin around our eyes and can cause premature wrinkles and crow’s feet.

4. Invest in proper headgear. A wide-brimmed hat can protect your face, ears, and neck. If wearing a baseball cap, don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your neck and ears, as well as wear protective clothing that covers exposed areas.

5. Be aware of medications that increase your sensitivity to the sun. Common antihistamines, such as Benadryl; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like aspirin or ibuprofen; certain antibiotics, including Bactrim or Tetracycline; antidepressants; antipsychotics; and some oral diabetic medications can make you more sensitive to sunlight. Be sure to check with your pharmacist regarding your medication’s side effects.

6. Protect youngsters. Children younger than six months should not use sunscreen, but it is important that they are protected from the sun’s rays with protective clothing and shade. Children six months or older can and should have sunscreen applied regularly.

7. Perform regular skin checks. It might seem like a tedious task, but always be on the lookout for any changes to moles, freckles, or birthmarks. Additionally, monitor for any new skin changes that have occurred. Use a mirror to evaluate hard-to-see areas and have regular skin evaluations by your healthcare provider or dermatologist.

8. Avoid using tanning beds. Tanning beds increase the risk for skin cancer, including melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Tanning beds produce harmful UVA and UVB rays, and there is also no proven evidence that using tanning beds to obtain a base tan decreases your risk of sunburn. Beyond that, tanning beds increase the chance of developing cataracts and ocular melanoma.

9. Make healthy lifestyle choices. The choices we make in life can often be shown through our skin. To maintain healthy skin, refrain from smoking as it damages collagen and elastin in our skin. Avoid using products with harsh chemicals; instead, use mild soaps and daily moisturizers and treat your skin gently. Try and limit your hot showers, as this can strip essential oils from your skin. Pat down your skin after bathing to retain its moisture. Don’t forget to eat a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grain. Most importantly, don’t forget to hydrate! Drinking more water will definitely reflect through the health of your skin. It’s also important to engage in stress-reducing activity and get a full night’s sleep.

Seven Spring Skin Care Tips

Seven Spring Skin Care Tips

By | Skincare | No Comments

It’s finally springtime and your skin is still recovering from the harsh conditions of the winter months. Exposure to harsh weather conditions like strong winds and subzero temperatures can cause skin conditions such as frostbite, irritation, inflammation, and dry skin. Here are a few tips to ensure your skin is glowing this spring!

Repair Damaged Skin

Start with collagen repair! During the winter months, your skin is exposed to freezing temperatures and harsh winds, which can cause cracked skin and damage to collagen. Consult your dermatologist or medical esthetician to find out which skin repair and rejuvenation treatments will work best for you.

Cleanse Often

When the temperatures start warming up, your body naturally starts to produce more sweat. From the months of March through May, your skin constantly replenishes natural oils, so experts suggest cleansing your skin twice a day. Washing once in the morning will help remove dirt and bacteria, and washing in the evening will remove makeup, particles, and pollution that can build up throughout the day.

Exfoliate

Remember to exfoliate your skin twice a week. The exfoliating process helps unclog pores, rejuvenates your skin making it brighter, as well as allowing your moisturizers and skin care products to penetrate more deeply. Exfoliating will also help with tight or flaking skin, as it can alleviate some of the common symptoms. If the issues persist, consider seeing your dermatologist, as this might be a sign of an underlying condition.

Change Your Diet

If your skin is acting up, you might want to think about what your diet and eating habits have been like, as they have a direct impact on your skin health. You can switch up your diet in the springtime to incorporate more fruits and vegetables that are in season. Spring provides us with wholesome fruits and vegetables like berries, oranges, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, and more! Increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat can fuel collagen, improve skin elasticity, and lighten your skin. Make sure you are getting enough vitamins when considering revamping your diet.

  • Vitamin A: Improves wrinkles and brown spots and can be found in oranges, carrots, cantaloupes, leafy greens, eggs, and low-fat dairy foods. In addition, Vitamin A is a retinoid, which is common in over-the-counter treatments for acne and other skin conditions.
  • Selenium: This mineral helps protect skin from cancer, age lines, and dry skin. Selenium is found in foods such as Brazil nuts, button mushrooms, shrimp, lamb, red snapper, cod, halibut, tuna, salmon, cooked beef, light turkey, oysters, sardines, crab, and whole-wheat pasta.
  • Vitamin C: This can help protect your skin from harmful UV rays while repairing collagen and elastin. Vitamin C is found in red bell peppers, citrus fruits, papayas, kiwis, broccoli, greens, and brussels sprouts.
  • Vitamin E: This is an antioxidant, which helps prevent cell damage caused by the sun’s harmful rays.

Wash Your Sheets

It sounds simple enough, but if your sheets are not washed often, your bed can be harmful to your skin. Research shows that 4 to 17 different species of fungus can grow on your old and synthetic pillows. Pillows also contain sweat, dead skin cells, dandruff, and oil, all of which can clog pores and create skin conditions. It is recommended that you wash your sheets and pillows once a week to ensure your skin stays clean, clear, and healthy.

Acne Treatments

Consult with your dermatologist to determine which acne treatment will work best for you. Whether it’s blackheads, whiteheads, pus-filled pimples, or cysts, treatment options for mild to chronic acne include topical acne treatments, oral medications, laser treatments, and chemical peels. A consultation with your dermatologist will allow you to select treatment options that work best for your condition. It’s also beneficial to get a facial once every month in addition to your acne treatments. This will provide your skin with the tender love and care it deserves when going through harsh acne treatments.

Reduce Makeup to Reduce Clogged Pores

In the springtime, our skin produces more oil and we sweat more, which can make our makeup transferable and can lead to the overapplication of makeup. Consider swapping your liquid foundations for a lighter mineral powder foundation. Mineral powder foundations consist of natural hypoallergenic ingredients and have an easy application. Powder-based products will help you achieve that matte and flawless look that will last all day. Avoid applying heavy makeup this spring and opt for a lighter option. This will also mean fewer breakouts.

How to Get Rid of Cellulite Naturally

By | Skincare | No Comments

Cellulite is something many women struggle with and can cause self esteem and self image issues. It’s something that 80-90 percent of women struggle with, while men do not. Cellulite appears as small divots or bumps in certain areas, and although it’s not harmful to your health, some women hate the fact that they have it.

So, What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is not just on the surface of your skin like many think. Cellulite is pockets of fat that have sunken between bands of tissue under your skin called septae. The reason men don’t often get cellulite is because they have stronger bands that criss-cross under the skin and keeps the fat in place more effectively, while women have more flexible vertical septae.

Despite contrary belief, it’s not just overweight women who get cellulite. Both thin and heavy women are prone to cellulite. Although if you are heavier, you are more susceptible to cellulite, but even thinner women will have fat between their muscles and skin.

Losing weight might help the appearance of cellulite, but it can also make it worse. Those losing a significant amount of weight, can have saggy skin, which will make the divots more prominent. Cellulite can also be caused by genes, as your genes help determine how you store fat and the appearance of it. Treating cellulite also isn’t easy. Many have marketed that liposuction is a treatment for cellulite but removing fat with this method can make the appearance of your skin even worse than before.

There are ways to reduce the appearance of cellulite easily and effectively at home. Here are 8 ways to get rid of cellulite naturally.

Dry Brushing

Although this method is not scientifically proven, many have first hand experience that dry brushing is a natural way to reduce cellulite. Dry brushing can be done once or twice a day when your skin is dry. The best time to do so is before showering and ensure that your brush is also dry. It might sound odd, but it feels great and encourages blood and lymph flow in the body. It opens up the pores on your skin, allowing more oxygen flow as well.

Using a brush that has natural stiff bristles rather then synthetic bristles will give you  optimal benefits. One with a detachable long handle will also be useful to reach hard places. Only brush towards your heart, as brushing away can cause stress on your veins. Don’t brush too hard as your skin should be stimulated but not irritated. Dry brushing will not only remove dry skin, but will also promote cell renewal, blood flow, and tighter skin.

Myofascial Massage

Cellulite is thought to be formed in a layer of connective tissue below the skin called the superficial fascia that contains fat cells. It is fibrous and factors like inactivity, injuries, and improper exercise can cause scar tissue in the fascia which contributes to bumpy divots on the skin. The fascia can become thicker, coarse, and less flexible, causing it to adhere to underlying structures that it would normally glide over.

Myofascial massage or myofascial release done by a professional can smooth the layer of connective tissue and can even help with certain types of muscle and joint problems related to the imbalances in the fascia. Using a deep tissue foam roller can be beneficial as well for those who don’t have access to a regular massage.

Coffee Scrubs

Coffee has an invigorating and tightening effect on the skin. Create a coffee scrub by mixing ¼ cup of coffee grounds, 3 tbs of brown sugar, and 3 tablespoons of melted coconut oil. Use this scrub to massage into the affected areas, as it stimulates blood and lymph flow. Massage into the skin with slight pressure, 2-3 times a week. There should be visible results within a couple of weeks.

Omega-3s

Consuming the wrong kinds of fats can lead to an imbalance of the fatty acids that are required for smooth skin and tissue. Omega-3s have been thought to reduce cellulite over time. Regardless if it works or not, omega-3s are beneficial for many other functions in the body and can give you glowy skin so you have nothing to lose by trying it out.

Kettlebells

Kettlebells are one of the most effective ways to work on your hips, thighs, buttocks, and stomach areas. It increases blood flow to these areas to remove cellulite and is proven to build muscle and burn fat, both of which help reduce cellulite.

Hydrate!

The most important thing the body needs is water. Without water, we become dehydrated, causing our skin to be dull, dry, and lacking elasticity. Being hydrated can smooth out the skins texture, reducing the look of cellulite. Try to get your required daily intake of water or eat foods high in water content like cucumbers, melons, and leafy greens. These foods are full of water and low fat, also helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Although cellulite is not something that we can get rid of permanently, we can take steps to improving the appearance of it. It is also nothing to be too stressed about as many women have it! To learn more about improving the appearance of cellulite contact Clearview MediSpa today.

Purifying Benefits of Charcoal Skincare

By | Skincare | No Comments

Charcoal has become a popular addition to skincare and beauty products in the recent years. It’s been known to have many health and beauty benefits, and food grade charcoal can be ingested to help detoxify the body.

Despite the dark appearance of charcoal, it can help whiten teeth as well. But what about adding it to your skin and hair? Some might be hesitant to use the substance due to the dark appearance of the powder, but charcoal has proven to produce amazing results.

The toxins from your body stick to the activated charcoal, and since it’s all natural, it won’t add any chemicals to your hair and skin. Charcoal makes a good deep cleanser and exfoliant to remove any unwanted toxins and dirt from your body. Here are ways activated charcoal can help your skin:

Deep Cleansing

Charcoal can be found in several different cleansers at the drugstore. It has become a key ingredient in many deep cleansing face washes and masks. The charcoal soaks up oil and dirt, leaving you with a beautifully cleansed face.

Some cleansers use higher concentrations of charcoal. These should be used once or twice a week, as you don’t want your skin to be stripped of its natural oils and moisture. You should also take a look at the other ingredients in the face wash, as some are better suited for different skin types. Choose the products that best suit your personal needs.

No More Oily Skin!

Oily skin is a problem many of us face. Using activated charcoal can help reduce the amount of oils produced by drawing them out from beneath the surface of your skin. You can use either a cleanser or mask that contains charcoal and your skin should be more matte in no time.

Only use these products once or twice a week, as you don’t want your skin to dry out. People with dry skin can use a weaker formula for deep cleansing and exfoliation and use it less frequently than someone with oily skin.

Treating Acne

Activated charcoal in soap form can provide gentle exfoliation and pull out excess oils and toxins beneath the skin, and may help reduce your breakouts. You can even use it directly on the pimple as a spot treatment. Depending on how severe your acne is, charcoal might be a beneficial addition to your skincare routine.

Smaller Pores

When our pores are clogged, it creates texture and unevenness that is visible on our skin. Every day, our skin comes in contact with toxins and pollution that can increase aging and clog our pores. Using activated charcoal on our face can help pull the dirt and toxins out, creating a smoother appearance. Using a scrub will help exfoliate and remove excess dirt as well and provides a deep cleanse.

Soothe and Heal

Not only does charcoal help you achieve clear skin, it can also be used to soothe and heal bites, cuts, and irritations. Take some activated charcoal powder and slowly add water to make a paste. You can put this paste on cuts, insect bites, stings, scrapes, and minor infections and it will help speed up the healing time. The paste will absorb venom and bacteria from the injury site and bring down swelling and pain.

Reduce Toxins in your Hair

Not only can you use charcoal on your skin, but it can also be used in your hair. Similar to how it works on your skin, using an activated charcoal shampoo will draw out dirt and oil from your hair and wash it away. Charcoal is gentle and won’t disrupt your hairs natural moisture levels.

Add Volume!

Charcoal in shampoo not only reduces dirt and oil, but it can also add volume to your hair. Regular shampoos only remove surface dirt and are not as deep cleansing as ones that contain charcoal. When our hair is dirty, it can be weighed down. Regular shampoo may not be enough to get all the oils out, but shampoos containing charcoal will deep cleanse your hair and won’t leave a residue, allowing it to be lighter and voluminous.

Soothe Scalp Conditions

Many people suffer from dandruff, redness, or oily and itchy scalps. Using a scalp treatment with activated charcoal or adding it to your shampoo can relieve irritating scalp conditions. The same way it works on your skin, charcoal will pull out toxins and dirt from your hair follicles and you will see a noticeable difference.

Activated charcoal can be found in many products at the drugstore. This super ingredient can deep cleanse and purify your skin and hair quickly and efficiently. If you suffer from skin and hair conditions, you should definitely give activated charcoal a try.
