How To Freshen Up Your Spring Skincare Routine

By | Skincare | No Comments

Spring has officially sprung! Even though it doesn’t always seem like it at this time of year, warmer weather is on its way and that means that it’s time to update your skincare routine accordingly. With every change in the seasons comes new challenges for your skin, so it’s important to keep yourself protected and make sure that you’re doing everything that you can to keep looking great and prevent the signs of aging. While winter was definitely tough on your skin, spring can be just as bad!

Do You Know Your Skin Type?

First things first: you need to figure out what kind of skin you have. Before you can begin planning out a new skincare routine, you should get to know your skin so that you can optimize your regime to get the best results possible. So how do you go about doing that? It really isn’t too tough – you can narrow down your skin type in about an hour with this easy process.

Start off by washing your face thoroughly with a light cleanser and removing your eye makeup. Don’t wash too hard though and be sure to follow up your cleanse by patting your face dry. Give your skin about an hour to revert to its natural state (and don’t go disturbing it by touching your face). Grab a tissue and dab your face, especially your nose and forehead.

If your skin falls under the Normal classification, your tissue should be free of both oil and flaking skin. If your tissue shows a large amount of oil then you have Oily skin. Dry skin is usually characterized by flakes of dead skin appearing on the tissue. And finally, Combination skin means that you display all of the above traits.

As the weather gets nicer, you’ll definitely want to be spending more of your time outside, which means that more of your skin will be exposed to the sun for a lot longer than normal. With that being said, it’s important to make sure that your daytime moisturizer has an SPF to protect you. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can be particularly damaging, leading to wrinkles and fine lines later in your life. If you aren’t using a daytime cream with SPF, you should be loading up on the sunscreen.

Cleanse Better

Spring is about waking up from your hibernation, so it’s super important to take your cleansing game to the next level. Over the winter, you may have buildups of dead or rough cells and your skin might just be feeling tired in general. Take extra time to give your face deep cleanses to remove debris and give yourself that wonderful spring glow. You’ll look healthier and feel like you’re starting fresh! Exfoliation is also huge for this, so make sure that you’re using an exfoliating cleanser or a solid exfoliator.

Out with the Old

There’s more to spring cleaning than just clearing out the junk in your garage! Take the changing of the seasons as an opportunity to throw out any expired or old makeup that you might have in your collection. Expired skincare products can clog up your pores and lead to long-term negative effects, so don’t put your skin at risk.

Pucker Up

The shifts in air quality and atmosphere that come with the end of winter can often be hectic for our lips. It’s normal for your lips to become dried out and chapped, which can be both unsightly and painful. Consider investing in a high quality lip balm that will moisturize and hydrate your lips. Even some vitamin E cream can work well in a pinch to revive your lips.

Staying moisturized is always important, but during the spring this should be your primary focus. The winter air has probably left you feeling drier than usual and the cool spring air definitely won’t help. Anything with vitamin E will work wonders on your worn down skin and help protect yourself against the harshness of spring weather.

Can You Get a Mammogram With Breast Implants?

By | Advice | No Comments

One of the questions patients often ask is: “how does getting breast implants affect mammography and the ability to detect breast cancer?” I think this is a really good question and it shows a lot of thought has gone into whether a breast augmentation is the right operation for someone.

It is important to note that breast implants can affect mammograms, but this can be overcome if your radiologist knows you have breast implants ahead of time so that they can take additional special views of the breast which allow them to see much more of the breast tissue.  How this works requires a bit of background information on both mammograms and breast implants.  A mammogram is a special type of x-ray of the breast, and in order for it to work properly, the breast needs to be compressed between the two plates to make it as thin as possible for the x-rays to pass through the tissue easily and show if there are any abnormalities. Breast implants can interfere with mammograms in two ways: affecting the compression of the breast, and by blocking some of the x-rays. Because a breast implant is much denser than breast tissue, it cannot be compressed between the plates as well, and this means that the tissue around it can’t be compressed as much as it otherwise would have.

Breast implants – both silicone and saline – are “radiopaque” which means less transparent to the x-rays. A good way to think of this is that your breast tissue is like a glass window in a house – easy for light (or x-rays in this case) to get through so it is easy to see through. An implant acts like frost on that window – light can get still get through, but you can’t really see any details through it. On a mammogram, this looks like a white blob that prevents doctors from seeing what they need to see. That’s why special views were developed that use the plates to push the implant back towards the chest and compress the breast tissue around it, allowing doctors to see what they need to see. This acts like wiping the frost off the window.

How much breast implants affect mammograms also depends on where the breast implants are placed. When the implant is directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular) it is a little more difficult to displace than when it is behind the muscle (submuscular), so it can interfere a bit more. When implants are under the muscle, the breast tissue sits more on top of the implant and there is also a thick layer of muscle between it and the implant, so it can be separated from the implant more easily during a mammogram. Although it is not the only reason I prefer to place implants underneath the muscle, less interference with mammography down the road is one of the more important ones.

Patients who are worried, carry a higher cancer risk, have inconclusive mammograms or have had problems with mammograms before have other options. These other options include ultrasounds or MRI studies, both of which can be helpful to either detect or better characterize breast masses regardless of breast implant placement.

The Bad Habits That Are Causing Your Wrinkles

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

As we age, the possibility of developing wrinkles becomes more and more likely, but did you know that some of your daily habits might be speeding up the aging process? Identifying and cutting out these skincare no-no’s is absolutely necessary in your fight against aging.

How many of these are you guilty of? Follow along and figure out exactly how you can make yourself look as young as you feel – for longer.

Not Getting Enough Sleep

With our busy schedules, it can be tough to get a good night’s sleep. Getting enough rest allows your body to keep your skin looking tight and firm. Even the way that you sleep can increase the likelihood of wrinkles; sleeping on your back can reduce your chances of facial wrinkles from being pressed up against a rough pillow all night.

Not Wearing Sunscreen

As tempting as it might be to forego sunscreen while tanning outside, protecting your skin should be your number one priority. Sunscreen shields you from dangerous UVA and UVB rays, which cause wrinkles and fine lines in your skin over time.

It’s no secret that smoking is bad for our bodies, but it can also make you age much faster. The chemicals in cigarettes can damage your body’s ability to produce elastin and collagen that keep your skin youthful leading to older, more tired looking skin. Kick this nasty habit for the health of your skin and yourself.

Grabbing weekend cocktails can be a fun outing with friends, but it’s not so fun for your skin. Alcohol dehydrates you, which makes your skin seem tired and saggy. Over time, this can increase the appearance of wrinkles.

Leaving Your Makeup on Overnight

We’ve all been there; you come home after a long night and the last thing that you want to do is wash your face before you pass out in bed. Sleeping with your makeup on can actually be one of the worst things for your skin and you should always avoid it at all costs. Cleanse your face and remove your makeup to unclog your pores and lessen your chances of damaging your skin.

How Do I Get Rid of Wrinkles?

Despite your best efforts, you might still end up with wrinkles as you get older. Fortunately, there are many different treatment options available that can have you looking young and fresh-faced in no time.

How to Choose Breast Implants

By | Advice, Treatments | No Comments

One of the common questions I see online is “how do I choose from all the breast implants?” What I would say to anyone who asks is this: choose the right plastic surgeon, they will help you sort through the various implants.

Saline or Silicone; round or anatomic; smooth or textured; high, moderate or low profile – these are just some of the decisions that need to be made in choosing the right implant. When you combine these variables there are hundreds of options for breast implants. This is one reason why Plastic Surgery is a 5-year residency and the reason that you as the consumer should not have to choose from all of the breast implants. After having a formal consultation with a plastic surgeon, you should really only have to choose from some of the implants. Three or four at most if your surgeon knows what he or she is doing.

The choice of implants should start with a consultation with the surgeon where a medical history will be taken and a physical exam performed. Your surgeon should have a discussion with you at this point about what your goals for surgery are – what you want to look like afterwards. Women may desire a figure that is slightly enhanced, natural looking, or noticeably augmented. It is good to bring in pictures to help with this point in the process.

Your goals for surgery combined with other factors such as how much breast tissue you currently have, whether it is ptotic (saggy), and where on your chest your nipple sits will help your surgeon decide on the shape, surface texturing and projection of the implant that will be best for you and whether you need a lift in addition to the augmentation. Part of the physical examination involves taking some key breast measurements, the most important of these for determining implants is the base width of the breast which will guide us to a range of implants that are appropriate for you. At this point, the choice should be narrowed down to 3-4 implant sizes within a range, making the choice much less overwhelming.

At my practice, we then give the patient sizers that correspond to these implants. These are essentially nonsterile versions of the actual implants. Patients will then place these sizers into their bra under a tight t-shirt to see how their breasts might look after surgery. Of course, if the patient wants to be a bit bigger or smaller we can move up or down from this initial range, but at least we have a reasonable starting point to work with.

At first glance, choosing breast implants might seem like an overwhelming task but if you work closely with your surgeon and their staff, it can be a straightforward and even enjoyable experience. Book your consultation today.
