7 Tips On How To Treat Oily Skin In The Summer

By | Skincare | No Comments

Heat increases the production of sebum, which means that our skin tends to get much oilier in the summer months. This increased oil can clog pores and make blackheads much more visible. These tips, however, will keep oil at bay all summer long.

How To Treat Oily Skin In The Summer

  1. Choose Skincare Products For Oily Skin
In the summer months, you should switch to cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically designed for oily skin (like an oil-free moisturizer). Although you may have been tempted to do away with your moisturizer altogether, it is still essential to healthy skin.

Look for skincare products with salicylic acid (ideally 2 percent), which will break down oil in the pores. However, also ensure that you don’t over-cleanse – over-washing your face actually has the opposite intended effect, causing your skin to produce too much oil in an effort to replace what was just lost. Washing your face morning and night is sufficient.

  2. Exfoliate
Exfoliating once a week with a scrub will serve to loosen oil in the pores and reduce the amount of oil on your face overall.
  3. Wear Minimal Makeup
In the summer months, avoid heavy makeup. Not only it is uncomfortable to wear, but it also melts into your pores, which then causes your skin to produce more oil. Go bare-faced instead (but don’t forget the sunscreen!) or opt for lighter foundations, like tinted moisturizer or mineral powder foundation.
  4. Managing Oily Summer Skin

These tips will not necessarily treat or prevent your oily skin, but they will help minimize shine.

  5. Choose a Water-Based, Mattifying Sunscreen
Don’t ever skimp on the sunscreen! A water-based, mattifying sunscreen is a good option for those with oily skin as it will minimize shine.
  6. Use a Mattifying Primer
Silicone-based, mattifying primers, which you wear under your main base, can help minimize shine throughout the day while also reducing the appearance of pores.
  7. Keep Blotting Papers Handy
Keeping blotting papers by your side can help curb shine in a pinch by absorbing excess oils.
  8. Use Charcoal-Based Masks
Charcoal-based masks can not only be a respite from a long summer’s day, but can also help temporarily reduce oil and unclog pores.
  9. Eat a Healthy Diet
There is certainly a link between diet and skin. A diet high in processed foods like fried foods and other junk, as well as alcohol, can actually increase oily skin. Choose healthy options instead. Also ensure that you drink enough water throughout the day. One common cause of oily skin is actually dehydration.
