5 Easy Ways to Reduce Wrinkles for Beautiful, Younger-Looking Skin

By | Advice | No Comments

You’re beautiful at any age, but it’s true what they say — it’s hard to look good when you don’t feel good. And who can blame the modern woman, with the demands of a high-powered career, family life, and the signs of ageing that come with the day-to-day stress of living in Toronto?

Unlike eyebags and dark circles that go away with proper rest or can be covered up with a concealer, or acne that responds to a regular skin care regimen, some signs of ageing made worse by stress take a little more than rest, toner, and concealer to get rid of.

Anyone over the age of forty is no stranger to pesky wrinkles, making them look much older than they are and feel on the inside. But that ends now.

While we can’t turn back time to reduce stress and add heaps of sunscreen to your skincare routine in your twenties or even your teens, we can definitely still reduce wrinkles — even if blowing out birthday candles and experiencing other signs of ageing are inevitable.

All it takes is five simple self-care rules, from paying closer attention to your skin to living a better, healthier lifestyle.

Stay Out of the Sun

We know, it’s easier said than done. Everyone needs a healthy dose of vitamin D that comes with sunshine, but there’s no denying the fact that sun damage is the leading cause of wrinkles.

Simply, staying out under the heat of the sun without taking the right precautions makes the sun’s UV rays work double-time on your skin as free radicals form and damage the elastin fibres underneath.

And they won’t just cause wrinkles. You’ll also deal with brown spots, red blotches, and pigmentation, which only add years to your skin. With constant exposure to the sun, it won’t matter what genes you inherited.

If you must stay out, take proper precautions. Wear protective clothing to limit the amount of exposed skin, and if you can, avoid direct exposure when the sun is at its height, such as noon, or any day during summer in Toronto.

If You Must Stay Under the Sun

The cardinal rule of skincare: wear sunscreen. This is a good habit to get into at any age. It’s never too early or too late to start, and your skin will thank you for it.

Aside from preventing painful and damaging sunburn, sunscreen has long-term benefits in terms of shielding skin from UV exposure, reducing wrinkles in the process. And because your skin stays protected even with constant exposure, you’re less likely to develop skin cancer, you’ll stay just as beautiful for longer.

Kick the Habit

The reality is, there’s no shortage of health issues and complications that arise from smoking. But lung damage aside, cigarette smoke is also highly detrimental to the skin, prompting the signs of ageing, like wrinkles, into overdrive.

Various studies show that cigarette smoke releases an enzyme that breaks down the collagen and elastin fibres of the skin, causing ageing — often most visible as wrinkles.

The nicotine in cigarettes can also cause blood vessels on the skin to narrow, which restricts blood flow, and as a result, the delivery of oxygen and essential nutrients like vitamin A. This adds to sagging skin and premature wrinkles.

If you’re still smoking — or are around family and friends who do — there’s no better time than now to kick the habit to reduce wrinkles.

Catch Some Zzz’s

Good, restful sleep is hard to come by, especially for the modern woman in Toronto dealing with a career and a busy social calendar. But it’s hard to take on the world when you don’t look and feel good. And there’s no better antidote to stress and the breakouts, dark circles, or worse – wrinkles – than regularly getting a good night’s rest.

More than feeling better and energized, there’s a science to getting a good night’s sleep and clear, younger-looking skin. According to dermatologists, a lack of sleep causes the body to produce excess cortisol, which is a hormone that’s harmful to skin cells. Cortisol causes them to break down, resulting in any number of imperfections that only add to a tired, sleepless appearance.

Make it a habit to get enough sleep every night, enabling your body to produce more human growth hormone (HGH) to repair the damage to your skin, restoring its elasticity and your youthful glow. With increased elasticity, wrinkles are reduced — and in the process, your energy restored for the day-to-day hustle out and about in Toronto.

Explore Lasting Wrinkle Reduction

With advanced wrinkles and signs of ageing, taking care of yourself requires a little more effort than sleep and sunscreen. It’s time to pamper yourself with a tried and tested treatment.

Enter Forma, the most advanced non-surgical treatment for reducing wrinkles in no time. Designed to target mild to moderate wrinkles and treat advanced ones in the long-term, Forma uses the latest in radiofrequency technology to reduce wrinkles by treating them at their root.

Combined with a trusted skincare regimen and healthy lifestyle choices, Forma effectively reduces wrinkles non-invasively. All it takes is a gentle heat delivered to the deepest layers of the skin that boosts collagen production and rebuilds the elasticity of otherwise loose skin.

Whether you’re dealing with loose skin on your face, tightening skin and reducing wrinkles around the eyelids, jowls, smile lines, and neck, or on the rest of your body, like in the arms, torso, and knees, Forma can treat these effectively, resulting in a younger-looking appearance.

Eight Facts You Didn’t Know About Wrinkles

Eight Facts You Didn’t Know About Wrinkles

By | Advice | No Comments

Wrinkles. They are the bane of your existence, giving away your age, or worse, making you look far older than you are. There are millions of products on the market that promise to reduce wrinkles. However, even though you can slather on the face creams and stay out of the sun to try to avoid the inevitable, one way or another, the wrinkles will appear. But how much do you know about wrinkles, and can you actually get rid of them? Here, we take an honest look at eight facts most people don’t know about wrinkles.

1. Pricey cream myth

Skin creams are often referred to as “hope in a bottle” by in-the-know skincare professionals. Why? Because they are advertised with the promise of erasing the lines of time, providing you with more youthful skin. The truth is that the creams will do little to improve the common issues with ageing skin, including those annoying wrinkles and sagging skin. Although you might see modest results, you will not be turning back the hands of time with anti-ageing creams, no matter how much you pay for them. Instead, you need proven wrinkle treatments to help defy the signs of ageing.

2. Diet counts

If staying thin and healthy isn’t enough to keep you focused on eating well, a British study might help change your mind. They found that sugar produces cell molecules that age skin. The proteins attacked by advanced glycation end products, including that very important collagen and elastin, which keeps your skin full and firm. When it is damaged, it leaves behind saggy skin and wrinkles, not to mention a duller complexion. In fact, the damage doesn’t end there. The molecules also affect your antioxidants, so you become more susceptible to the damaging rays of the sun.
It’s also about the healthy choices you make. Foods high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals all aid in helping you age well. Foods rich in vitamins like Vitamin C and E reduce photoaging caused by sun exposure. As well, Vitamin C reduces wrinkles and dry skin related to ageing.

3. Not just genetics

You’ve probably heard the saying that a man should look at his girlfriend’s mom if he wants to see how she’ll age. That’s because genetics can have a strong impact on how and when you age. However, there are other factors at play. For example, a study found that although twins are “genetically programmed” to age similarly, lifestyle can greatly change the outcome of how each twin will age. This includes smoking, sun exposure, weight, depression, and stress levels, which can all contribute to early aging.

4. Sun exposure

Although you might love having that youthful sun-kissed glow in the summer, the risks of sun damage will age you more quickly. The Environmental Protection Agency says that up to 90% of the damage caused to ageing skin is due to exposure to the sun. Using sun protection makes it 25% less likely that the sun will increase ageing. The earlier you begin using sunscreen, the better it is for your complexion. And never underestimate its importance all year round. Although the sun might not appear as often in the winter and fall, if you will be participating in outdoor activities for longer lengths of time, sunscreen is always a must.

5. Drinking water

Water sure has its good points. It has zero calories so that it can aid in weight loss. It keeps you hydrated when you are active. But can it actually reduce the signs of ageing? Although many supermodels and actresses chug the clear liquid to help keep their youthful appearance, there’s no real proof it does help reduce wrinkles or keep skin plump. Dermatologists do say water can assist in helping maintain elasticity, but it really won’t wash those wrinkles away. Still, it’s worth switching to water as your drink of choice to reduce the amount of damaging sugary beverages.

6. Sleeping on your back

Controlling the position you sleep in can be a challenge. If you prefer sleeping face down or on your side, you’ll tend to wind up in this position at some point in the night. However, if you can try to sleep on your back more often, you might help keep wrinkles at bay. Sleeping face down on your pillow can cause permanent wrinkling, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Avoid side and stomach sleeping to keep your youthful appearance.

7. Silk pillowcases

Many beauty experts have advised using silk pillowcases as they are more gentle on your hair. However, silk is also helpful for your skin. According to dermatologists, silk fibres assist in maintaining moisture on your face while you sleep, which means you can wake up with smoother skin.

8. Wrinkles can’t be removed

While this is true, the appearance of wrinkles can undoubtedly be reduced. There are many paperwritings.com cosmetic skin treatments available that will significantly reduce wrinkles and improve the appearance of your skin. Many skin treatments help stimulate collagen production, while also removing layers of dead skin that can make your skin appear older. As well, wrinkle-smoothing treatments such as fillers can plump skin to make wrinkles appear less defined.

If you would like more information about the anti-ageing treatments we recommend, call our Clearview Medispa team at 416-445-2639. We can schedule a consultation to discuss your unique skin needs and find the perfect solution for you.

Nine Things to Know Before You Get Dermal Fillers

Nine Things to Know Before You Get Dermal Fillers

By | Advice | No Comments

Botox has become popular in the past few years as the injectable botulinum toxin temporarily eliminates wrinkles by freezing muscles in the face. The popular aesthetic procedure has become well known for its excellent and fast results with minimal downtime. If the injectables are done properly, the side effects are nearly non-existent. With all of that, there are still a lot of questions that you would need to be answered before considering getting the procedure. Here is what you need to know before getting botox.

1. Know where your injectables are coming from

Ensure that your doctor is an official vendor for any kind of substance you are having injected, including neurotoxins and fillers such as Botox, Vistabel, Bocouture, Xeoxin, Azzalure, and Dysport. To reduce the risk of getting an expired, contaminated, or potentially dangerous product, some manufacturers’ websites offer a tool to search by zip code for every licensed physician who has obtained their product legally.

2. You get what you pay for

Make sure that you are investing in good products, especially if it is being injected into your body. If the price is questionably low for Botox or filler, it might be that the product is diluted. Another possibility, if you are in the United States, is that your doctor purchased the product from a supplier in a country where government price controls keep pharmaceutical prices substantially lower than those in the U.S. You also risk the chance of unauthorized suppliers compromising the effectiveness and safety of injectables by not storing them at the proper temperature or even offering counterfeit products. You’re usually better off with a doctor who bases his or her fee on how many units of product are used, rather than how many different zones of the face are injected.

3. Blood-thinning meds aren’t the only thing to avoid pre-injection

Most people that have experience with Botox and fillers know to avoid anticoagulants such as aspirin and ibuprofen before treatment. It’s a risk, as those types of drugs hinder blood clotting and increase the risk of bruising should the needle nick a blood vessel. Also, avoid fish oil, multivitamins, green tea, cinnamon, ginger, and red wine a full week before treatment, as some antioxidants can increase the fragility of blood vessels and prevent clotting.

4. A consultation is crucial

Having a consultation before getting the procedure done is important. The doctor performing the injection should have you smile and frown and raise your eyebrows, as they should be carefully evaluating to see how different areas of your face naturally move. You want to look refreshed, as putting injections in the wrong places can make you look expressionless. You should also have a thorough health assessment done prior to getting injections, as certain antibiotics can increase the potency of neurotoxins. Antibiotics, specifically in the aminoglycoside category like gentamicin, can increase the potency of neurotoxins. To avoid any risks, put off any treatments while being treated for antibiotics.

5. Bruises can be undone

There is always a risk that injections could potentially hit a vessel, which can cause blood to pool beneath the skin and cause bruising. Neurotoxins typically require finer needles and are placed more superficially than fillers, but there is still a risk. Some dermatology practices offer a next-day complementary vascular laser treatment, which breaks down pooled blood and can help diminish bruises within 24 hours. If bruising is a concern for you, be sure to ask your doctor whether they offer the service.

6. Not all fillers are created equal

Avoid silicone, as it is the one filler that has the most complications. It is not FDA approved to fill wrinkles in the face. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are malleable and can be absorbed by the body, and will eventually break down over time. Silicone is a synthetic material that can’t be metabolized and can harden over time, which can lead to unevenness and bulges. It is also permanent and will not look the same over time.

7. Be prepared

For several hours after your shots, you will want to avoid doing certain things. Be prepared to avoid putting on makeup, washing your hair, exercising, lying down, or messing with the injected zones, as these activities can cause the toxin to spread to muscles or weaken the injection. It is also advised that you do not fly for several hours after receiving Botox, as the change in cabin pressure could potentially cause the spread of the toxin to other muscles that you do not want to be affected. Prepare for little movement for the next few days.

8. Side effects

Botox given between the brows can cause a temporary sensation of dizziness or headache. This is usually caused by slight swelling in the area from the fluid injected, and should fade away within 10 to 15 minutes.

9. Best results

Preventative Botox is a term used when treating younger patients like those in their twenties or early thirties for expression lines that are visible at rest and during movement. Starting early will prevent the worsening of wrinkles and can sometimes reverse the first peek of lines and wrinkles.

Do You Need Retinol in Your Skincare Routine?

By | Advice | No Comments

It’s inevitable that everyone will age over time. Creams and serums will promise to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, but it’s not always guaranteed to deliver results. Doctors and dermatologists have known retinol to reduces wrinkles and lighten scars; however, it does come in different forms and delivers different effects.

Do You Need Retinol In Your Skincare Routine

What is Retinol?

Retinol is a form of retinoid derived from vitamin A. It’s normally used in skin care as it has been known to give your skin a healthy glow. As you age, your skin cells stop turning over and eventually pile up. Retinol has been known to encourage cell turnover at a normal rate. It minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, improves texture, and diminishes hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Retinol is sometimes added to acne products as it can clear blocked pores, allowing your skin to breathe and preventing future breakouts.

Different Kinds of Retinol

There is not just a single type of retinol. It can come in various doses and strengths and can deliver different results. Over-the-counter retinol is a weaker version of tretinoin, while prescribed retinol, also known as Retin-A or tretinoin, is much stronger.

Prescribed retinol is typically used for severe acne, or if you want to see quick anti-aging results. This form of retinol can be found in smaller doses in drugstore skin care products. Tretinoin can treat fine lines, skin discolouration, texture, enlarged pores, and stimulates blood flow and collagen production.

It’s recommended to start off on a gentle amount before using the strong stuff as it can cause redness, dryness, and discomfort. Some skincare products mix caffeine or peptides and other ingredients that boost the effectiveness of retinol. Although the results may not be as quick, over-the-counter retinol is milder on the skin. It’s like tretinoin but is milder and more tolerable for most people.

It’s important to start out slow before increasing the amount, as all retinol works the same. Some may take a little longer than others but will deliver the same results. It’s safer to start out with a low dose in a drugstore product and slowly increase the dosage over time. Start off with using the retinol every two to three nights and increase the usage until your skin can tolerate it every night.

It’s best to use retinol at night before bed, as it increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Ensure that you always wear sunscreen as well; as without it, it can cause sunspots. There are retinols specifically made for oily or sensitive skin, and it’s best to match your skin type to get the best results. Always avoid the eye area and corners of the mouth and nose, as retinol can build up in these areas and cause flaky and cracked skin.

When used correctly and cautiously, retinol can deliver amazing results. It’s important to wait at least 10 minutes after washing or exfoliating to use retinol, as your skin is more sensitive immediately after cleansing

When Not to Use Retinol

When your skin becomes red, dry, and flaky, it’s not accustomed to retinol or you’ve used too much of it. If your skin becomes angry, it’s best not to use it for a few days until your skin calms down. Once your skin feels better, you can restart on a very small amount and slowly build up your tolerance again.

If you’re using acne medication, it’s best not to mix it with retinol. Although retinol is sometimes incorporated into acne cleansers and treatments, mixing the two without understanding the proper doses and types can cause severe irritation. Salicylic acid, glycolic acids, and alpha hydroxy acids are the types of acne medications you don’t want to mix with retinol. Instead of the clear and glowing skin you were hoping for, mixing the two chemicals can cause redness and even burning in some cases.

Do not use retinol if you are planning to get waxed. Because of the cell turnover rate that retinol provides, your skin is not as thick as it used to be. The retinol removes several layers of skin and becomes fragile and sensitive. Stop using retinol at least a week before any facial waxing or else the wax could take your skin off.

Although you should be careful when using retinol, the results can be amazing. It can smooth and even out your skin in just a few weeks if used properly. It is important to use the right formulations and reputable brands to ensure the best results!

6 Ways to Transform Your Fall Beauty Routine

By | Advice | No Comments

As you put away your swimsuits, tanks and flirty summer dresses, it’s also time to change out your beauty routine and the products you’ve been using. The weather is getting cooler by the day, so pull out your tall boots, booties, sweater vests and layers with lots of texture.

6 Ways To Transform Your Fall Beauty Routine

All the fun we had this summer has done a number on our skin, hair, nails and feet. Here are 6 ways to transform your fall beauty routine..

Hydrate Your Skin

Seasons change, and so does your skin. Depending on your age and where you live, begin by switching out your light warm weather moisturizer. Trade up to a richer, heavier moisturizer to guard against the drying fall and winter winds.

Look for one that targets those dark sun spots left over from overexposure to the sun, known as hyperpigmentation.

Remove the dead skin cells with a scrub to brighten and repair your summer face and body. This will induce natural oil production, so use it on your feet, elbows or anywhere that feels dry. Don’t forget your lips if they have become dry from the sun.

Put Retinol Back Into Your Routine

If you stowed away retinol for the summer months, it’s time to pull it back out. There is nothing better to smooth out those wrinkles and brighten your skin. This miracle vitamin A derivative will boost your collagen production and even out your complexion as it unclogs pores.

Fall Into A New Palate

It’s always fun to experiment with new makeup colors, and this fall is no exception. Hide those pink pastel lipsticks and polish and bring out the fall shades.

Fall 2017 is showcasing lots of shimmer and metallics. Bronzes and browns on the eyelids, along with dark jewel tone shimmer shadows. Try a dark brown eyeliner instead of your normal black.

Maybe it’s time you played with a darker shade of lipstick! There is nothing better than a berry shade or even a bright red in the autumn.

This year’s darker nail colors are spectacular, with all shades of mauve, grey, and espresso, and deep dusky roses, our favourite. Have fun with color!

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Yes, even in the fall you should wear sunscreen. True, there is less skin exposed, but the UVA rays are just as strong as in the summer. Those are the nasty rays that cause damage and can lead to cancer.

Pay Attention To Your Skin

If your skin is suddenly developing pimples and breakouts, it is telling you something. Dryness and sensitivity are all signs of inflammation.

Maybe you want to start fresh with a wrinkle treatment or dermal filler.

Take advantage of our Fall Specials. We can address your sun-damaged skin with a chemical peel, or you can relax with a Platinum Anti-Aging Facial before the cold weather sets in.

5 Ways To Look And Feel Your Best In 2016

5 Ways to Look and Feel Your Best in 2016

By | Advice, Treatments | No Comments

It’s hard to believe that 2016 is already here! A new year is full of hope, promise, and new beginnings, as everyone begins to work towards fulfilling new years resolutions. The majority of you may have made resolutions related to health and wellness. Are we right? While everyone makes resolutions (health related or not), the majority of these resolutions tend to be broken a few months into the year. This year, that is all about to change.

Here are 5 steps to help you look and feel your best this year, as well as some simple tricks to help you stick to these steps, year-round!

  1. Eat Clean

We all live busy lifestyles, and it often seems easier to order take out, delivery, or munch on junk food rather than make the effort to prepare healthy food. As you may have encountered, eating poorly can make you feel tired, and can lead to several chronic diseases. In order to make sure you stick to your goals, make a plan for yourself. If you are planning on eating out, choose a place with healthy alternatives. Toronto has a large selection of restaurants with healthy options. Give one of these 10 healthy restaurants a try the next time you are planning an outing with your friends and family in Toronto. Making a meal plan for the upcoming week will also help you eat healthier, as well as save money! Just remember, don’t be so hard on yourself. Rather, celebrate all your successes and continue chasing your goals.

  1. Exercise Regularly

Exercising regularly, partnered with eating healthier, are the most popular resolutions made by North Americans every year. Being physically active can help you reach your dream body goals, as well as keep your body and mind in top shape. Integrating a quick workout into your daily routine is a simple way of making sure you stick with your goals. Try incorporating exercises right as you wake up, before your shower, during your lunch break, or before bedtime. While going to the gym 5 days a week is a great form of exercise, is that a realistic goal for you? If so, go for it! If not, consider other forms of exercise that you can actually stick to all year-round. Alternatively, choose exercises that appeal to you, such as dance classes, yoga or sports. Exercising helps you keep your bones strong, build muscle, reduce body fat, and much more; so make it fun and stick to it!

  1. Reduce, Tighten and Shape

Everyone has those problem areas that seem impossible to get rid of, even with exercise and healthy eating. Luckily, there are 2 procedures that may be just what you need to help start the year with your dream body. Body TITE is a minimally invasive procedure that provides body firming results and reduces fat in those areas that you are unhappy with. This procedure reduces fat, tightens the skin, and reduces cellulite in problem areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, knees back and arms. RFAL technology is used to remove excess fat through a small incision, ultimately leading to body tightening of up to 40%. The best part is that results can be seen immediately, with best results noticeable after 6-12 weeks!

Alternatively, Body FX is a painless non-surgical treatment that helps reduce fat and provide a more toned body. This treatment uses vacuum massage to melt away fat cells in many areas of the body, including the lower and upper abdomen, inner and outer thighs, the buttocks, the back, and bra line. There is virtually no recovery time with Body FX, and the results are permanent if you continue your exercise regime, and eat healthy.

  1. Reverse Signs of Aging

It may be a new year, but your face doesn’t need to show it! Treatments such as dermal fillers and fractora can help you achieve a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers are injected into different areas of the face to add volume and correct various cosmetic issues. The injections require zero downtime, and the results typically last for several months. Fillers can be used to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and more.

Fractora skin rejuvenation is a skin treatment that uses radio-frequency energy to stimulate collagen production, leading to a more youthful look. Results include a more even skin tone and texture, tighter pores, smoother and firmer skin and reduced wrinkles. Consider this your radio frequency facial!

  1. Reduce Stress

While you may think that you work better under a little stress and it makes you more productive, stress negatively impacts your health. Stress can give you headaches, make you feel fatigued, lead to overeating or undereating, and a lack of motivation. Make it your resolution to not only start 2016 stress-free, but continue to cut down your stress levels all year long.  Some simple ways to reduce your stress include exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and spending time with friends, family, and loved ones.

At Clearview MediSpa, we would like to help you meet all your resolutions and body goals by providing you with customized, state-of-the-art treatments. We hope that 2016 is your best year yet, and you look and feel your best all year long. Book your free personalized consultation today to get started!

What To Ask Before Your Next Procedure

What To Ask Before Your Next Procedure

By | Advice, Treatments | No Comments

Considering getting a little work done to look and feel your best? You are not alone! Whether for cosmetic or medical reasons, millions of people opt for plastic surgery to reach their desired results every year. Undergoing plastic surgery can be life changing, and you want to ensure you cross all your ‘t’s’ and dot all your ‘i’s’ before your procedure is under-way.

Be sure to ask these 10 vital questions at your next consultation:

  1. Are you a board certified plastic surgeon?
    • You want to ensure that your surgeon has the right training, and is qualified to perform plastic surgery. After all, this is your face and body we are talking about, and you want to be confident in your surgeon’s skills!
  2. How many years of plastic surgery training and experience do you have?
    • Whether you are undergoing a simple, or a more invasive procedure, the number of times your surgeon has performed the procedure is important. The more times a procedure has been performed, the more comfortable the surgeon will be with the procedure and it’s complexities, and the more comfortable you feel in your surgeon’s abilities and recommendations.
  3. Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
    • You have done your research and chosen the procedure that you believe is best for you. However, your surgeon is the expert and will be able to provide you with other options that may be more suitable for your objectives.
  4. How long will the procedure last?
    • Some procedures, such as Wrinkle Treatment, are quick and result in zero downtime. Abdominoplasty, on the other hand, may require an overnight stay, and follow-up visits are often necessary. Your surgeon will be able to provide you with more information, so you know how much time to book off work and other activities.
  5. How long is the recovery time, and what is expected of me before/after procedure?
    • I’m sure you’re anxious to continue your daily activities and start enjoying your results, so how long before you can get back to it? The recovery time will differ depending on the procedure. Upon consultation, your surgeon will provide you with a better estimate of recovery time, ensuring you take enough time off for a full and safe recovery. Be sure to ask your surgeon regarding preparations for before and after the surgery.
  6. What are the potential risks and complications associated with the procedure?
    • You want to be sure that you are aware of any possible risks, and how they are preventatively addressed.
  7. Where and how will the procedure be performed?
    • Will anesthesia be used? Will the procedure be performed in an office or hospital? Your surgeon will be able to inform you of all the details prior to the procedure so you feel comfortable and prepared. You will want to make all arrangements ahead of time, so everything runs smoothly on the day of your procedure.
  8. What is the total cost of the treatment?
    • As with any investment, you want to have a complete breakdown of all the costs you will incur before, during and after your procedure. Note, this is also a good time to ask your surgeon what financing options are available.
  9. Do you have any before and after photos of similar procedures?
    • Before and after photos will be able to provide you with a realistic idea of what you should expect after your procedure. Keep in mind, every person is individual and unique, and results may vary depending on factors including body type, age, etc.
  10. What are the possibilities in case of dissatisfaction?
    • We certainly hope that this is not the case, but in the event that you are not happy with your results, you will want to know all possible options that will lead to your satisfaction. If you are thorough in your questions prior to your procedure though, you will have realistic expectations of the results, and should be nothing but happy with the outcome!

Communicating openly with your plastic surgeon is the first step to ensuring whether plastic surgery is the right choice for you. Working together with your surgeon will help them understand your goals, expectations, and motivations; and ensure that the treatment selected will meet your expectations.

Your personalized consultation is a great time to ask any and all questions you may have about reaching your desired results. Feeling comfortable with the surgeon you have selected is the first step to the new you. Meet our knowledgeable staff at Clearview MediSpa and have all your questions answered by booking your own personalized consultation today!

What You Need to Prepare Before Your Next Procedure

By | Advice, Recovery, Treatments | No Comments

Whether you are brand new to the world of cosmetic surgery, or even if this isn’t your first time around the block, it can be very easy to get caught up in the excitement of the finished product ahead. Before you can enjoy your results, there are a few things you need to prepare before your next procedure is underway.

While the steps to preparing may differ based on your chosen procedure, generally you want to make sure that you have fully thought through the before, during, and after of your selection prior to actually receiving your treatment.

Here’s your to-do list of what you need to prepare before your next procedure:

  • Research your procedure
    • Based on a number of factors, there may be multiple procedure options for your targeted problem areas. Preliminary research into procedures available for your needs will help to give you an idea of what to plan for. For example, some procedures, by design, are less invasive than others, such as Body TITE versus Liposuction, and will require less healing and recovery time.
  • Schedule a consultation
    • An initial consultation with a specialist cosmetic surgeon will help to set realistic expectations of the procedure you have chosen. This consultation will give you a better idea of whether you are on the right track towards your expected outcome.
  • Get your financing in order
    • Before you commit to any procedure, make sure there is a payment or financing option that suits you.
  • Request the appropriate time off
    • Many cosmetic procedures, but not all, will require time off work. Depending on your chosen procedure, you may need as little as no time off, or as much as six weeks off of work. This also depends on the physical intensity of your job, as less strenuous jobs will allow you to return to work sooner than more laborious jobs.
  • Pack for your overnight stay
    • Sometimes an overnight stay is required post-procedure. Is this is the case, be sure to have everything you need packed in an overnight bag before you head out on the day of your procedure. This should include anything that will make you feel comfortable, relaxed, and able to get a good night’s rest after your procedure. Don’t forget your toothbrush!
  • Arrange post-procedure travel
    • Whether your procedure requires an overnight stay or not, you may be more comfortable having your travel home arranged ahead of time. Driving may be uncomfortable post-procedure, and you always want to make sure you are being safe, and taking the proper precautions when heading home.
  • Prepare your personal after-care plan
    • If you are taking time off work post-procedure, and are advised to be resting to aid in your recovery, make sure you have arranged for all your day-to-day needs to be taken care of. It could be as simple as making sure you have enough food to skip your weekly grocery shop, or dropping the kids off at their grandparents house to give you a night off. Either way, make sure you are prepared so the only thing you have to think about post-procedure, is your recovery.
  • Know what you have to avoid
    • As mentioned before, some procedures require a break from physical activity or time off work. Blepharoplasty, for example, also requires you to keep your eyelid area clean and dry for up to two weeks post surgery. It is very important to have your post-procedure instructions of do’s and do-not’s very clear, so your recovery is smooth sailing.

Can You Get a Mammogram With Breast Implants?

By | Advice | No Comments

One of the questions patients often ask is: “how does getting breast implants affect mammography and the ability to detect breast cancer?” I think this is a really good question and it shows a lot of thought has gone into whether a breast augmentation is the right operation for someone.

It is important to note that breast implants can affect mammograms, but this can be overcome if your radiologist knows you have breast implants ahead of time so that they can take additional special views of the breast which allow them to see much more of the breast tissue.  How this works requires a bit of background information on both mammograms and breast implants.  A mammogram is a special type of x-ray of the breast, and in order for it to work properly, the breast needs to be compressed between the two plates to make it as thin as possible for the x-rays to pass through the tissue easily and show if there are any abnormalities. Breast implants can interfere with mammograms in two ways: affecting the compression of the breast, and by blocking some of the x-rays. Because a breast implant is much denser than breast tissue, it cannot be compressed between the plates as well, and this means that the tissue around it can’t be compressed as much as it otherwise would have.

Breast implants – both silicone and saline – are “radiopaque” which means less transparent to the x-rays. A good way to think of this is that your breast tissue is like a glass window in a house – easy for light (or x-rays in this case) to get through so it is easy to see through. An implant acts like frost on that window – light can get still get through, but you can’t really see any details through it. On a mammogram, this looks like a white blob that prevents doctors from seeing what they need to see. That’s why special views were developed that use the plates to push the implant back towards the chest and compress the breast tissue around it, allowing doctors to see what they need to see. This acts like wiping the frost off the window.

How much breast implants affect mammograms also depends on where the breast implants are placed. When the implant is directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular) it is a little more difficult to displace than when it is behind the muscle (submuscular), so it can interfere a bit more. When implants are under the muscle, the breast tissue sits more on top of the implant and there is also a thick layer of muscle between it and the implant, so it can be separated from the implant more easily during a mammogram. Although it is not the only reason I prefer to place implants underneath the muscle, less interference with mammography down the road is one of the more important ones.

Patients who are worried, carry a higher cancer risk, have inconclusive mammograms or have had problems with mammograms before have other options. These other options include ultrasounds or MRI studies, both of which can be helpful to either detect or better characterize breast masses regardless of breast implant placement.

How to Choose Breast Implants

By | Advice, Treatments | No Comments

One of the common questions I see online is “how do I choose from all the breast implants?” What I would say to anyone who asks is this: choose the right plastic surgeon, they will help you sort through the various implants.

Saline or Silicone; round or anatomic; smooth or textured; high, moderate or low profile – these are just some of the decisions that need to be made in choosing the right implant. When you combine these variables there are hundreds of options for breast implants. This is one reason why Plastic Surgery is a 5-year residency and the reason that you as the consumer should not have to choose from all of the breast implants. After having a formal consultation with a plastic surgeon, you should really only have to choose from some of the implants. Three or four at most if your surgeon knows what he or she is doing.

The choice of implants should start with a consultation with the surgeon where a medical history will be taken and a physical exam performed. Your surgeon should have a discussion with you at this point about what your goals for surgery are – what you want to look like afterwards. Women may desire a figure that is slightly enhanced, natural looking, or noticeably augmented. It is good to bring in pictures to help with this point in the process.

Your goals for surgery combined with other factors such as how much breast tissue you currently have, whether it is ptotic (saggy), and where on your chest your nipple sits will help your surgeon decide on the shape, surface texturing and projection of the implant that will be best for you and whether you need a lift in addition to the augmentation. Part of the physical examination involves taking some key breast measurements, the most important of these for determining implants is the base width of the breast which will guide us to a range of implants that are appropriate for you. At this point, the choice should be narrowed down to 3-4 implant sizes within a range, making the choice much less overwhelming.

At my practice, we then give the patient sizers that correspond to these implants. These are essentially nonsterile versions of the actual implants. Patients will then place these sizers into their bra under a tight t-shirt to see how their breasts might look after surgery. Of course, if the patient wants to be a bit bigger or smaller we can move up or down from this initial range, but at least we have a reasonable starting point to work with.

At first glance, choosing breast implants might seem like an overwhelming task but if you work closely with your surgeon and their staff, it can be a straightforward and even enjoyable experience. Book your consultation today.
