Sunshine Vitamin: The Benefits of Vitamin D

By | Self-Care | No Comments

Vitamin D is well known as the vitamin that gets produced in your body due to sun exposure. You might get a healthy dose of vitamin D from doing some yard work on a sunny day or cooling off by the pool with the kids. Certain foods can help produce vitamin D in your blood. While we know where vitamin D comes from and how to get more of it, what are the actual benefits of this sunshine vitamin, and how can it help our bodies? To help answer these important questions, we’ve compiled a list of some of the major benefits of vitamin D and how to spot a deficiency in your diet.

Keeps Skin Healthy

One of the benefits of vitamin D is that it can help prevent your skin from ageing prematurely and treat certain conditions, like eczema and psoriasis. Since your vitamin D intake is part of a healthy diet, it also contributes to your overall skin health. Vitamin D not only encourages skin growth and renewal, but it also helps the immune system overall, which has major benefits for your skin. Since vitamin D is thought to reduce inflammation, it may even help with acne for some. At Clearview MediSpa, we offer many anti-ageing skin treatments that can complement your healthy diet and vitamin intake to maximize results and get the glowing skin that you deserve.

Fights Depression and Anxiety

Another major benefit that you can get from vitamin D is an improvement in your mood. Vitamin D is a great option for helping with mood disorders or anxiety since many people with these issues have been found to have vitamin D deficiencies. It may also prove that there is a lot of truth behind the thought that going outside for some fresh air and sunshine actually helps fight depression.

Helps Prevent Diseases

Vitamin D can ward off diseases like heart disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and even the common flu. As mentioned before, it can even combat autoimmune disorders, like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

Helps with Weight Loss

Are you dreaming about your summer body and shedding that extra weight gained over the holidays? Luckily for you, vitamin D may help you in your quest to lose weight and keep it off. In one study, those who took vitamin D with calcium supplements lost more weight over a period of time than those who did not. It’s worth a try after all, isn’t it?

Improves Sleep Quality

Have you ever had a full day in the sun and felt completely exhausted afterwards? Perhaps you didn’t even do much but noticed that the sun can drain you and leave you feeling tired and sleepy. While this is primarily because the sun can dehydrate you and your body has to work extra hard to keep you cool, it could also be from all that vitamin D you get. Vitamin D has been known to improve sleep quality and quantity. It is especially good for those with sleep issues and insomnia. A vitamin D deficiency could mean that you are getting less sleep and having more disrupted and unusual sleeping patterns.

Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency

A vitamin D deficiency can present itself in many ways. Some common symptoms include weak bones, muscle pain, hair loss, and more. If you have a vitamin D deficiency, you are also more at risk for bone diseases, such as osteoporosis. Those who spend most of their time indoors or live in big cities with pollution may be more likely to have vitamin D deficiencies, as they may not get a normal amount of vitamin D exposure through the sun. People who have darker skin may also have less vitamin D intake through the sun, as more melanin means less vitamin D can be absorbed. If you are concerned about having a vitamin D deficiency, then you may want to visit your doctor who will conduct a blood test or X-ray examination to determine if you have a deficiency and, if so, how severe it is.

Recommended Amount of Vitamin D

While vitamin D can be sourced from the sun, it is better not to increase sun exposure to boost your vitamin D levels. This is because the sun can damage skin cells and cause sunburn, which can lead to premature ageing and skin cancer. If you are experiencing a vitamin D deficiency, you should consider taking supplements or increasing your daily intake of foods rich in vitamin D. The daily recommended amount for an average adult is 600 IU (international units), or 15 mcg. This amount varies based on your age, as adults over 70 years generally need more.

Conveniently, you can find many daily vitamins on the market that include vitamin D. You will want to be wary of consuming too much vitamin D as well. This overconsumption can have side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased blood levels. Kidney failure is a more serious side effect of too much vitamin D.

Foods with Vitamin D

If you eat right and incorporate nutritious foods into your diet daily, supplements are just the cherry on top (if needed). Some foods to increase your vitamin D intake include:

  • Egg yolks
  • Shrimp
  • Salmon and seafood
  • Cheese
  • Mushrooms
  • Cod liver oil
  • Fortified milk, yogurt, and orange juice

Now that you have the breakdown of vitamin D and why it is essential to your diet, you can make better-informed decisions about the foods you consume and your daily sun exposure. Remember that while it is considered the “sunshine vitamin,” there are other sources that can help provide your daily dose of vitamin D safely and without sunburns, leathery skin, and premature wrinkles. Telltale Signs of Aging and How You Can Beat Them

By | Self-Care | No Comments

Everyone ages differently. Some of us can look ten years younger than we really are, and some of us might get some premature wrinkles. Regardless of where your skin is at, it’s never a bad time to start taking care of it. Here are some measures you can take to slow down and prevent the process of aging.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

The sun is one of the leading causes of premature aging. It’s crucially important to protect your skin from the sun, as it can lead to sun spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. You should wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.

Try Not to Drink or Smoke Too Much

Smoking and drinking drastically speed up the aging process. Smoking is not only bad for the skin, but it’s also bad for our teeth and nails, all causing you to look older than you really are. The nicotine in cigarettes prevents your skin from getting oxygen, leading to dullness in colour and a lack of elasticity, causing wrinkles. Some wrinkles can even appear in smokers as young as 20!

Alcohol can cause puffiness and is extremely dehydrating. Collagen is a protein that keeps the skin looking youthful and firm. Alcohol will also reduce your vitamin A levels, which is essential for the production of collagen and the key to looking youthful!

Get Your Beauty Sleep!

There is a reason why it’s called beauty sleep. We all need to sleep in order for our bodies to go into repair mode. Most of our restorative functions happen around 1 AM, while we are deep in slumber, which is why it is so important that we sleep early and get enough of it. It has been proven that most people need six to eight hours of sleep, but if you can sleep even more than that, go for it!

Reduce Your Stress

Sometimes managing our stress can be difficult, but it’s important to be aware of when we become stressed both physically and mentally and take steps to reduce it. When we’re stressed, our bodies release hormones as it goes into “fight or flight” mode, which leads to an increase in inflammation that can age us significantly. Stress can take a toll on the skin barrier, causing water loss and reducing the skin barriers ability to repair itself. We can’t break away from stress completely, but there are techniques we can do that will help manage our stress better.  Meditation, yoga, and exercising are all forms of de-stressing.

Start Your Skincare Routine!

It’s never too late to start taking care of your skin. Our skin is the largest organ we have, and it’s also the most delicate. Having a proper skincare routine is vital to keeping our skin youthful and hydrated.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are good for us both internally and externally.  Topical vitamin C, ferulic acid, and coffee extract are all antioxidants that can prevent the damage of free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules made naturally from our bodies and from environmental factors like pollution, UV radiation, and smoking. They are a hidden cause of aging that many don’t know of.

Without preventative measures, free radicals can damage collagen, elastin fibres, and even DNA. Dietary forms of antioxidants are berries, green tea, tomatoes, garlic, and red grapes. Incorporate them into your diet for even further prevention of premature aging.

Facial Massages

Facial massages can mimic the results of a facelift. It can reduce muscle tension and increase blood flow. You can either go get one done professionally or do a DIY facial at home. Facial massages can boost circulation by pushing blood through the blood vessels, and movement allows new blood to enter while moving toxins and impurities away. This can keep your skin looking youthful and fresh.

Exfoliation

As we get older, our cell turnover rate slows down and our dead skin cells do not shed as easily. Slight exfoliation is good for our skin, as it promotes fresh and glowy skin rather than an uneven skin tone. Whether it be a gentle chemical exfoliant like lactic acid or a facial scrub, both are sure to give your skin the gentle push it needs. Even a face cloth with a cleanser will do the trick.

Be sure to know what your skin can tolerate. Some can handle daily exfoliation while others can only do it once a week or they will get very irritated and red. Don’t over exfoliate as this can cause aging as well, rather than preventing it.

Don’t Just Moisturize Your Face

Many say that your neck is the area that first shows signs of aging and is the most neglected. Don’t forget to moisturize your neck and your chest as the skin there is very delicate. These areas are usually the areas where wrinkles occur first and can make a woman’s age obvious. Apply both sunscreen and anti-aging products for optimal protection against signs of aging.

It’s important to take care of our skin in the earlier ages before signs of aging occur. Prevention is key to keeping youthful and beautiful skin. Beginning preventative skin care measures now will guarantee younger looking skin and you’ll be thankful later!

Mommy Makeover: How Body Contouring Can Help You Get Your Body Back

By | Self-Care | No Comments

It can be hard to lose weight post-pregnancy, and this can take a toll on our physical and mental states.

Here are some tips to shed the pounds and get back to your old body.

1. Don’t go on a diet. The more you restrict yourself of certain foods, the easier it might be to binge on those foods and gain even more weight. Listen to your body and eat when you are hungry and stick to healthy foods. The weight loss should occur naturally. Make sure you don’t eat less than 1,800 calories a day as your body needs the fuel.

2. Superfoods are foods full of nutrients and don’t contain a lot of calories and fat. Moms need a lot of nutrients especially post pregnancy. One thing that women should eat more of is fish, like salmon, sardines, and tuna. Fish contain an essential omega-3 fatty acid called DHA that is imperative for brain function and the nervous system. Calcium-rich foods like milk and yogurt are important as they support strong and healthy bones. Foods high in protein and fiber like chicken and beans are also superfoods that you should keep in your diet.

3. Breastfeeding can help you lose weight as it burns up to 300 calories a day. This is something to consider if you need a little help.

4. Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated will keep you full and prevents you from overeating. It can also speed up your metabolism and increase fat loss.

5. Engage in both cardio and strength training. You don’t have to sign up for a gym membership, just taking a walk or using light weights at home should be enough. Exercise really helps with stress and depression as well and can prevent emotional eating.

6. Get a good night’s rest. Having a newborn can really mess with your sleeping schedule; however, being sleep deprived can hinder your weight loss efforts. It puts stress on the body and can lead to lack of exercise and increased eating. Try and take as many naps as you can and sleep when your baby sleeps.

If diet and exercise aren’t enough to lose the weight and you need a little help, there are always options. VelaShape and Zerona are two new innovative body contouring procedures that will help you get your figure back.

VelaShape

VelaShape uses radio frequency, infrared light, vacuum suction, and mechanical massage. It is the only FDA cleared body contouring device that helps contour, shape, and slim the body safely while reducing cellulite and firming the skin.

The infrared light and radiofrequency energies heat dermal and hypodermal tissue in the areas that need help. The heat helps reduce cellulite by boosting fat cell metabolism and reduces the number and size of fat cells. The mechanical massage rollers increase circulation, encourage lymphatic drainage and eliminating fat cell byproducts and toxins while gently kneading the targeted area.

The vacuum suction technology reduces the appearance of cellulite by stretching fibrous bands in the epidermis to smooth out dimples The outcome of these high-tech applications is a significant reduction in body circumference and cellulite, creating smoother and firmer skin.

VelaShape sessions are usually between 20 and 40 minutes. You might experience mild bruising and redness, but this usually goes away after a few days. In rare instances, scabbing or blistering can occur in people with very loose skin. Most people notice result like tighter and firmer skin after one treatment. After six treatments, people notice a reduction in cellulite and inches in the treated areas.

VelaShape has been scientifically proven to give results. Most people experience a reduction of three inches in the targeted areas after just four treatments. Some patients say their cellulite was reduced by up to 63%, while another clinical study showed that 85% of patients lost three inches from their thighs.

Zerona

Zerona uses cold laser technology that emulsifies fat. The low laser stimulation releases the cellular contents of fat cells. Once the fat contents are released, they are absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system. This method safely removes excess fat from the patient’s waist, hips, and thighs.

The Zerona procedure causes fat cells to reduce in size, resulting in a loss of inches all over the body. The treatment is approximately 40 minutes, is pain-free, and comes with no adverse post-procedural side effects. Most patients experience an average loss of 3.64 inches on their waist, hips, and thighs in just a few weeks.

Patients have to go through six treatments every other day for two weeks. They cannot go without a treatment for more than 72 hours or the fat cells may reuptake some of the fat. Patients must also stick to a strict diet and exercise routine and refrain from drinking caffeine and alcohol, as they could make the treatment less effective. By following a healthy diet and exercise program, patients can have long-term results.

What’s most important is keeping a healthy lifestyle. If you need help shedding that post-pregnancy baby fat, then definitely look into fat grafting and research which method is best for you.

6 New Year’s Resolutions For Self-Care

Say “NO” Sometimes

Many of us feel obligated to tackle any new project proposed at work, by friends and even your family. You do not have to do everything. Give yourself a break, know when to say no, and try not to allow any guilt bother you. If you happen to be someone who always agrees to take on more, that’s probably why you continue to be asked. Try an stop the cycle.

Step back, think about everything already on your plate, and politely say, “No, I can’t do that.”

Hang Out With Positive People

Skip friendships with people who bring you down. You know who they are; they always have something to complain about, something to be unhappy about, and never are positive. Try intentionally spending less time with them, and more time with happy, energetic and fun people.

Keep To A Sleep Schedule

This might be the most important self-care promise of all. Getting enough sleep can change your whole outlook. We become healthier, smarter, more focused, and relaxed.

Pick a time to go to sleep. We mean darken your bedroom, no TV, no smart phone and just getting into bed is not what works. Maybe take a warm bath or utilize essential oils and scents to relax you. Shoot for minimum 6-7 hours per night.

Put Yourself On The Calendar

Everything in the world is on our calendars: appointments, work projects, caregiving, errands, meetings, getting the children to after school activities. You get the idea. Give yourself time for just yourself.

    • Sit in the sunshine for just a few minutes each day
    • Choose a time to do some relaxing personal reading.
    • Have a cup to tea or other beverage and watch a movie.

These kinds of “Just Me” moments help you relax and rejuvenate. Don’t feel guilty, just enjoy.

Drink More Water

Seems obvious but many of us forget to stay hydrated. Give yourself the luxury of improving your skin as well as improving your health. Maybe substitute that 2nd or 3rd cup of coffee with water every day. Helps rid your body of unwanted toxins and will make you feel like you can rule the world. (almost)

The Last Tip

Don’t stress over what you can’t do. If you can conquer 3 out of the 6 resolutions, OK, that’s an improvement. Pat yourself on the back, Then work on some of the others. You might even find you will lose some weight.
