First and foremost, everyone should be wearing sunscreen. That means young and old, from toddlers to the elderly. Everyone should take precautions and protect themselves from the sun’s harmful rays.
It is universally understood that the minimum amount of SPF is SPF30. This blocks 97% of the sun’s harmful rays. Wearing a higher SPF is helpful, but unfortunately nothing blocks 100% of the sun’s rays. If you will be out in the sun for a longer time, switch to an SPF50.
Why You Should Wear Sunscreen
Everyone should wear sunscreen to protect themselves from UV rays, even on cloudy days. It should be water resistant and give broad spectrum protection.
Wearing sunscreen protects us from early skin aging and wrinkles, painful sunburn, and skin cancer.
There are two types of dangerous rays. UVA rays are the ones that cause aging, wrinkles and those brown aging spots. These rays can penetrate through glass.
UVB rays are the ones that can burn the skin, but they are blocked by windows. In order to have full protection, your sunscreen should provide protection from both types of rays.
When And Where You Should Wear Sunscreen
The simple answer is every day and anywhere your skin is exposed to the sun. Many of today’s make-up and foundations have SPF in them. Look for lipstick that has protection. Just going from your home to your car, taking a walk during lunch or playing outdoors with your children leaves you exposed. You may think this is not important, but when those sunspots and wrinkles begin to appear, you will wish you had been more attentive to these cautions.
At The Beach
Most of us know to slather on sunscreen when outside in the sun for long periods of time.
- Sunscreen should be applied every two hours and after coming out of the water.
- You should apply it 15 minutes BEFORE you go out into the sun.
- Make sure you apply it everywhere skin is exposed.
- Pay special attention to children and apply enough and frequently enough.
- The sand and the water are especially reflective of the sun, so be cautious while boating.
Winter Sports Activities
Don’t be fooled by the winter sun. It can be just as damaging as in summertime. If you like to ski, snowboard or do any other outdoor activities during the cold months, be advised that the sun will reflect off the snow, increasing its danger. Use sunscreen anywhere you skin will be exposed. Wear protective eye wear to minimize damage to your eyes.
Never go to a tanning bed. There are many excellent faux tanning products on the market now. You don’t have to sit in the sun to look like you did.
Wear a hat, especially a wide-brimmed one, while out in the sun.
It is always a good idea to wear sunglasses. Even young children should be wearing them, especially at the beach.
Wear protective clothing like long sleeves when out in the sun.
Just avoid the sun whenever possible. Sit under an umbrella or carry an umbrella when out in the sun.
Before we knew all the dangers of sunbathing, many people sat in the sun for hours on end to get that look of a healthy glow. Now we know that healthy glow can lead to some very unfortunate consequences.
